James P. Corbin papers, 1865-1904 (bulk 1875-1890).

Three daybooks (1875-1883), two journals (1865-1876), a ledger (1875-1891), and six letter books (1871-1896) chiefly contain business records. A few personal letters are included in the letter books. One record book (1880-1884) documents Corbin's activities as a justice of the peace. One of two notebooks (1880-1904) contains rough minutes of city council meetings in Fredericksburg. Three plantation diaries (1880-1889) and a record book (1880-1884) pertain to the operation of Moss Neck and Race Field Plantations, a local grange, and a stock farm.

James P. Corbin was a student at the Virginia Military Institute during the Civil War. He served in the cadet corps at the battle of New Market and continued in army service until the close of the war. In the early 1870s, Corbin operated a store and an insurance agency in Fredericksburg, Virginia. In the 1880s and 1890s, he operated Moss Neck and Race Field Plantations in Caroline County, Virginia. Corbin was a justice of the peace and a clerk for the city council of Fredericksburg. ...
